I grew up spending summers chasing lizards in my abuela’s backyard, dancing salsa in the streets, and hopping from beach to beach with salty hair and sand in my shoes. Even now, no matter how many times I visit, the island always surprises me.
It’s small on the map, but packed with soul, hidden gems, and unforgettable moments. In this Puerto Rico itinerary, I’m taking you on the kind of road trip I’d plan for my closest friends—filled with local spots, coastal views, and everything I love most about the island.

Day 1: Puerto Rico Itinerary – Beach Bites & Rainforest Adventures
Start your Puerto Rico itinerary with a stop at Los Dos Pinos, a cozy beachside food stand (open Friday – Monday from 11am to 4pm) at Piñones Beach, 15 minuets from the airport.
Here, you can savor local favorites like alcapurrias, crispy fried fritters made with plantains and stuffed with savory beef or crab, and bacalaitos, light and crispy fried codfish fritters. Pair these with a coconut water or beer as you watch the waves roll in—this spot is all about authentic island flavors and laid-back vibes.
After you’ve satisfied your beach cravings, make your way to El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico’s lush tropical paradise.
Hike the lesser-known trails like Las Tinajas or Charco El Hippi, or climb up to Torre Britton for stunning panoramic views of the rainforest. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a guided tour to experience the natural water slides—smooth rock slides shaped by centuries of rushing water that make for a thrilling, refreshing ride through the jungle.

Our stay in the rainforest was unforgettable. We booked a rustic hut tucked deep within the trees, where a massive tree had grown right through the roof, becoming part of the structure. Surrounded by the sounds of nature, it felt like a magical escape—perfect for unwinding and embracing the island’s natural beauty.
To wrap up your day, grab a jibarito—a Puerto Rican sandwich made with crispy, golden plantains instead of bread—at La Fonda Gourmet. Or, if you’re in the mood for dinner, head to La Parrilla, where their whole fried red snapper is a delicious way to end your day by the sea.

Day 2-4: Puerto Rico Itinerary – Island Hopping to Vieques, Bioluminescent Bays, and Wild Horses

Non-residents can’t bring their cars, but parking at the Ceiba ferry terminal is just $7 a day. Be sure to book your ferry tickets at least a week in advance and arrive an hour early to ensure a smooth start to your Puerto Rico itinerary.
Once you arrive on Vieques, settle into the charming town of Esperanza and check in at Melecon House, a cozy and laid-back spot perfect for unwinding after your ferry ride.
For lunch, head to Rancho Choli (closed on Mondays and Fridays) to savor some delicious local dishes. After lunch, get ready for an unforgettable evening: kayak through the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay, listening to pirate stories and witnessing the bioluminescence, especially stunning if you visit during a new moon!
The next morning, start your day with a hearty breakfast at Kristy’s before heading over to Mosquito Pier for a morning dive. You’ll have the chance to swim alongside sea turtles and explore the warm Caribbean waters.

Day 5: Puerto Rico Itinerary – Exploring Pork Highway, Coffee Farms, and Lake Carite
